Some individuals may have excessive gum (or gingival tissue) exposure when they smile. This may be because of genetics and their skeletal formation, a tight (hypermobile) upper lip, or shorter teeth. Depending on the case, our periodontists can perform a crown lengthening procedure wherein they remove excess gum tissue and reposition it to create and expose more length in the teeth.
As it is considered a highly subjective diagnosis, some define gummy smile as showing more than 2 millimeters of upper gum when smiling.
- Thorough examination of excessive gum tissue.
- Removal and repositioning of excessive gum tissue surgically or with laser as indicated.
- Home care instructions to prevent gum infection.
